We went out last night to celebrate an anniversary and decided to just walk up to Eight. I love love love living on the Avenue. I called first to make sure we could get in and was glad that I did. We often eat early to avoid the rush at popular places.
Their patio was open and it was magnificent. I always like to figure out which is the best seat in the place so that I can request it when I called ahead for reservations. I don't think there is a bad spot on the deck. Except maybe the tall tables. I personally don't care for the bar height tables in a restaurant but I understand that lots of people prefer them for people watching! We were tucked away in a cozy corner and for an anniversary dinner, it was perfect.
The wine list has some great finds and I had a beautiful glass of New Zealand wine. I am loving the wines this little country is producing these days. I like it when the sommelier includes their personal favourites instead of just the known standards.
The food was all scrumptious and we had a lovely evening. My hubbie had the beef ribs to start and they were beautifully done. It is a lot of meat for an appetizer but he was born and raised in Alberta so he was up for the task. I had the apple and beet salad and it was wonderful and fresh with lots of variety and a nice light dressing. There have been some menu changes since the last time we were there and we were told the menu was changing again on Monday. Yeah! As long as they keep the customer favourites, I love it when the menu changes regularly. Then I can go to the same place over and over again and know the standard of food and service will be the same but not the menu.
With mains in the $20 - $40 range, this place is a great deal especially given for the quality of the food, menu, atmosphere and location. Our meal including dessert but not including tip was exactly $100. We did feel ever so slightly rushed by our server but I appreciated them fitting us in with little or no notice so we didn't really mind. Another happy experience at Eight which might just be my new favourite restaurant in Calgary. Sorry Bravo.
