The Winners are In: Gold Medals for Lincoln Park Taquerias

Drumroll please....it's taken several months but we do have the Winners in the category: Best Chicken Taco in a Lincoln Park/Lakeview Taqueria. These taquerias have survived the preliminary rounds and all earned well-deserved spots in the finals. Here they are:

2nd Runner Up, No Medal: La Baguette Panaderia (Broadway North of Diversey). I had high expectations that this place might actually win it all. BUT, at the outset this taco had a bit of an annoying "liver-y" taste. This quickly gives way to a reasonably pleasant lingering chili spiciness. Bottom line is that it's just not as "initially interesting" as the 2 finalists.

1st Runner Up, Silver Medal: La Bamba Big as Your Head (2599 N. Halsted at Wrightwood). Without sauce is a bit milder in taste than the Winner. Pleasant aftertaste. The accompanying sauce is essential to bring out the "southwestern" oriented flavor that is typical of La Bamba. Very pleasant with sauce. Note: these tacos do not travel particularly well as the tortillas are very thin and shred easily.

The Winner, Gold Medal: Angela's Burrito Style (2546 N. Clark S. of Wrightwood). Just a very pleasant "grilled" taste to the medium-lean chicken. Maybe we just got this taco on a great night but it didn't seem as "sour creamy" as times past. From memory this place puts alot into the taco and it has a tendency to get overwhelmed by all the over-spilling ingredients. But not tonight, and that's all to the good because more balanced ingredients allowed the very pleasantly cooked grilled chicken to come through.

For those interested in a complete list of all taquerias in the sampling, see Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Lincoln Park Taqueria Crawl postings dated 11-15, 11-16, and 11-29.
