I've been pouring over the posts in Chowhound Italy - this forum is great!!! It's amazing to find so many helpful people taking the time to offer their advice to fellow travelers. I thought I would take the plunge and post a question of my own...
l'll be driving from Rome to Florence with a few friends and thought it might be fun to stop by a couple wineries on the way. We know very little about wine, but thought this would be a good chance to try to visit a couple famous wineries and try some amazing wine. We've read that winery tours in Italy are very different from winery tours in North America, so we've left all day for this activity.
Reading through some past posts, it seems that there are a lot of wineries recommended near Siena or near Greve. I can't tell whether the recommendations are based on the beauty of the winery, the quality of wine, the quality of tour, or all three.
Our priority would be quality of wine, so I'm hoping to select 2 wineries that are really well-known by wine snobs for highly rated / highly awarded wines. Perhaps one large famous historic winery, and one smaller boutique winery. I would love to go to a winery that produces famous "super tuscans", but it seems that most of these are closer to the coast.
I was also reading that Dario Cecchini at Panzano is a good place for lunch. Any other lunch recommendations on this route?
Thanks in advance!!!
