Wine Deal: 2005 Jackson Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, $3.99

Last week I stepped into Spencer & Daniel’s Wine Outlet (formerly Bargain Bank) on Polk for the first time since the name change. Quite a few things that look promising mixed in the usual chaff.

I picked up a bottle of 2005 Jackson Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc ($20 msrp) for $3.99. I loved the 2005 vintage in Marlborough, and I especially liked this wine when it was first released. Now two years down the road, it’s still delivering on the promise. More tropical than typical for this estate, the nose greets you with passionfruit and guava, along with lemon curd, gooseberry, and herbal notes. Restrained capsicum-wise, there’s also a spicy mineral flourish and some reductive aromas that clear up with a few minutes of swirling. The screwcap closure certainly kept this one fresh and bright, if a little reduced, but that goes away quickly. Good cut of acidity, and while not as aggressive as it was as a baby, this is a great buy for the price. There were many cases stacked up, so good quantities should be available.

While not opened and tasted yet, I also purchased
2007 Osborne “Solaz” Viura, $1.99 ($8 msrp)
and NV Miguel Torres Moscatel Oro, $6.99 (VDN-style Muscat dessert wine)

Other things that looked interesting if one has the need,
NV Seaview Australian sparkling wine, $5.99
Bugey (imported by Louis Dressner), $5.99 or 2/$10 – could be a good match for turkey
Dinon salt packed anchovies, $1.99 (October 2008 sell by date)

Of note, S & D offers a guarantee. Opened bottles that fail to satisfy can be returned within 14 days for store-credit.
