Westwood grill report: Zen Grill and Napa Valley Grille (long)

Just got back from a late dinner in Westwood. We first tried Zen Grill on Broxton around 10PM - it was mostly empty. We waited for a table around the entrance area for about 2-3 minutes before a server came over from the bar and told us that the restaurant is closed (despite the sign outside saying it closes at 11PM on Saturdays), and that the restaurant is closing for good next week. Oh well.

Undaunted, we tried the other grill(e) in Westwood - Napa Valley Grille. My last visit there was in mid-2004, and it was just a so-so experience. However, I heard that it has a new chef. Indeed, the food was much better this time around, and the menu has been revamped. For drinks, we each had one of the wine tasting "flights". Mine was red wine and my wife's white wine. Both were very good choices.

As for appetizers, I had the crab cakes - standard tasting fare. My wife had the "Waldorf" salad, which she rated as "excellent" (if you like blue cheese). Entrees: We chose the beef ribs au jus with polenta - really, really good!! The meat just falls off the bone. Yum.

Dessert appears to have improved as well. I recommend both of the desserts we had: The caramel pear bread pudding with honey ice cream, and also the apple blueberry crisp with vanilla ice cream.

Total bill for us (with drinks, before tip): $120. Service, by the way, was very competent and friendly. We heartily recommend Napa Valley Grille.
