After many visits to the area, I still think that the Bay House in Lincoln City remains the #1 fine dining restaurant on the central OR coast. Others may disagree, but after several meals here, this restaurant remains very consisitent in food, service and ambiance. The location is perfect...on Siletz Bay, and has great views at sunset. The service is always very professional. Foodwise, it reslly is very good...not especially creative, but very solid it everything. I had a delicious Dungeness crab cocktail, followed by a wonderful lamb loin. The wine list is excellent, and everything was right on. They do have a more casual bar/lounge which specializes in small plates...very nice.
We had a very nice, but still somehow disappointing meal at Beck's at the Whale Cove Inn in Depoe Bay. This is also a beautiful setting right on the coast. The chef Justin is a graduate of the CIA, so he's obviously well trained. The food was good, but somehow too cutesy and precious. I had the Pork Belly appetizer which consisted of a perfectly crisped and juicy piece of meat, but it was served with a sweet corn ice cream! I personally found the combination weird, and off-putting. Something tart, crunchy, or sour would have been much more appealing...perhaps sour cherries, pickled vegetables...or kim chee, etc. The sweet ice cream didn't work for me. The following lamb shank which I had was delicious, but somehow also too cute...perhaps, small would be a better word. Desserts were good, and my guest was pleased with his dinner. This is really a very nice restaurant, with professional, pleasant and competent service, but I guess I just like more basic, less experimental/cutesy food.
For lunch in the area, Tital Raves in Depoe Bay, Blackfish Grill in Lincoln City, and Saffron Salmon or Nana's Irish Pub in Newport are all fine.
