Vientiane in Portland

WHAT AND WHERE
Vientiane is a Southeast Asian market on Noyes Street that does Thai takeout. There are a handful of tables near the kitchen for on the spot eating, but getting one at peak times may require a wait.

SO MANY THAI RESTAURANTS DISAPPOINT
I travelled quite a bit in Southeast Asia. I lived in rural Thailand for a while and frequently crave the tastes that I left there. Sadly, I have been disappointed by so many stateside Thai restaurants that I had almost given up. New to Portland, ME, I recently went with friends to Vientiane.

BUT VIENTIANE IS EXCELLENT
I was floored by how good it is. Their laarb guy is judiciously spiced and flavored with Thai basil and citrus. In short, it's stupendous. The yam nua is first rate, also. I had the opportunity to try six menum items and all were good. I am truly impressed with the chow from Vientiane.

NOT JUST FOR THE FOOD
It's like they brought a little piece of Thailand to Portland. The uncovered plastic tables' near proximity to the tiny kitchen means you'll be wrapped in the sounds and smells of Thai cooking while you dine. I haven't felt so close to Thailand since I left.

ONE MORE THING
Only big farangs order pad thai! Try something different for a change. I hope you like this place as much as I do.
