New to this site so bear with me. I'm a Jersey transplant who's used to NY good eating. Please be aware that when you come to VA BCH most of the ethnic food has been "watered down". Nothing tastes as authentic as it does up north. There is a great Italian place, La Bella Italia, hidden in a strip on Laskin Road. We bring our relatives here all the time. (We're Italian and we know how to cook.) Don't expect great service but the food is worth it. Skip the coffee though. That's one thing they haven't figured out yet.
I agree that you must avoid the buffets. Mahi Mah's on the oceanfront is good. Lot of locals go there which is unusual for an oceanfront restaurant.
For an unusual dining experience, try The Melting Pot at Hilltop. It's all fondue. Be prepared to spend lots of money though. It ain't cheap.
