I've had great hopes for Urban Ice Cream in Campbell. Campbell is becoming a really cute little place, and this was a not-chain ice cream place with tables outside, and who knew what possibilities. We went over right after it opened a while back, but it was disorganized and they were out of lots of flavors, so we moved on, planning to return when they were a little more settled.
Went over there tonight. I ordered cherry, despite the fact that the taste I requested seemed bland. First impression validated -- the ice cream was nearly tasteless. The cherries were like red paper, and the ice cream was remarkably flavorless. But I was still up for this experience, so I ordered a mocha-java knock off (can't remember the name). It was muscle-free coffee with a swirl of something like Bosco chocolate syrup (remember Bosco?) and a smattering of nuts mashed so fine they basically disappeared.
My husband did better with "Asylum." which had crushed almonds, peanuts and macadamias (get it? it's nuts). But they were all mashed up to a point where they lost their individual flavors. There really wasn't anything about it that spoke up loud and clear. He said it was "unbalanced." A pun, maybe, but I think he was talking about the ice cream.
The location is charming, and it so makes you wish it was a really good place. I would have settled for just OK ice cream in the name of a local, non-standard place. I was dreaming of a replacement for Freddie's in SJ, now defunct. Frankly, they have better ice cream at Rite Aid drug store.
