union square/gramercy spots sought

winendiner | Jun 12, 2002 10:32 AM

i'm organizing a dinner this evening for a small group (4), and we're looking for something moderate, quiet, and friendly in the union square, gramercy area. places i'd like to avoid for one reason or another: zen palate, republic, steak frites, japonica, usc, periyali, pete's tavern. they're all fine, but i'm looking for something new.

has anyone eaten dinner at irving on irving? it seemed like a glorified deli (i've only had breakfast there), but have heard a rumor that evening fare is 'better than average.' how about cal's -- anyone been there? also on our possibilities list is the thai restaurant spice on university. i've never been there, any feedback?

we're open to any cuisine, and geographically (and for the right chow), we could stray up as high as flatiron.

thanks,

ac
