Boy I sure was on an Indian kick my last time in Cincinnati, Indian truly is a great cuisine and tough to get tired of w/the variety.
My brother suggested we try Udipi Café.
Udipi is a vegetarian restaurant, Im a confirmed carnivore and did have some reservations, but my brother told me to put them aside.
Was he ever right, Udipi serves some incredible food and I did not miss meat one bit. For those who are cost conscious, nothing is over $7.
We started w/a sampler appetizer platter as suggested by our waiter. Normally I have a good memory on what Ive eaten, but it all was so good and therefore disappeared so quickly I did not make any mental notes.
For my entrée I ordered masala dosai, a semi crisp rice flour crepe filled w/potato and onion inside. Delicious.
My brother ordered the spicy eggplant, again delicious.
For fun we ordered a huge puffy balloon of a bread (forget the name, starts w/a B), of course my nephew was quick to pop this balloon. We all had pieces that we dipped in a bowl of curried beans (garbanzo perhaps?). This was delicious as well as the bread w/a little tamarind sauce.
Every diner in the place was Indian w/the exception of ourselves and the diners next to us (probably a 100 person restaurant). They mentioned that Udipi Café is a family-owned 'chain' with a dozen locations across the country.
All Udipi Cafe's serve a strictly vegetarian menu from Southern India. OK, great/fulfilling food, great prices, what is the downside you may ask? Service, my brother has mentioned that service is a problem at Udipi, very slow, unorganized. This has always been the case he told me. Food was that good that I will be back without a doubt though.
