"Tunnel of Fudge" cake?

The Pillsbury Tunnel of Fudge cake recipe original recipe called for a box of Pillsbury Double Dutch Fudge Buttercream frosting mix that was discontinued long ago. I was considering trying the recipe using the Trader Joe's chocolate frosting mix, but was wondering if it's worth it. It calls for 1 1/2 cups of butter, 6 eggs, 1 1/2 cups of sugar, and 2 cups of chopped walnuts, and I'm guessing at least two boxes of frosting mix. Could be good, or it could be a waste of a lot of ingredients. I know there is a revamped recipe that doesn't call for the frosting mix, but most of the reviews say the results are nothing like the original recipe. Anyone remember the cake, and is it worth making?
