Tuk Tuk Asian Grocery Store and Siam Cuisine

Thanks to all the suggestions for Thai restaurants in Oakland Berkeley. So many to choose from - I decided to go to Siam Cuisine.

But first we stopped at the new Tuk Tuk grocery store on University. They have a takeout counter with a few tables. I didn't really look at the menu but they seemed to have lots of stuff. They are still stocking the market itself but you can find a good deal of staples already - curry pastes, noodles, spices, fresh produce and a pretty good selection of frozen foods. They also have cooking utensils and sundries. The store was so neat and clean.

I bought some fried durian chips - they were different...kind of salty, not really sweet - didn't taste like durian. I did notice they had frozen durian - I love durian smoothies but my housemate might throw me out of the house if I brought it home!

Then off to Siam Cuisine. We had the fresh spring rolls with the peanut sauce. It was light to start and the peanut sauce was really good. I absolutely loved the duck salad. Perfectly seasoned and on a bed of very fresh crispy iceberg. Then I had the chef special catfish in their housemade spicy red sauce. It had lots of thai basil and julienne kafir lime. It was listed as hot but I thought it was more medium. My dining partner had the vegetarian pad thai. She liked it a lot and thought it was better than most - not too sweet or greasy. I didn't try it because I wanted to save my stomach for the duck and catfish. Next time I want to try the duck in red curry with thai pumpkin. We spent a little over $40 and have some left overs for snacking the next day.

Thanks again for the suggestions - I plan to try out Your Place, Ruen Pair, and a few of the others.
