Tsunami in Coolidge Corner - RANT

A couple of us here in the dorm got a craving for sushi and tried to go to our usual standby on Beacon (Sushi Express) only to find them closed tight. So, we opted to walk for ten minutes to Coolidge Corner and to go to Tsunami based upon my experiance there a few years back... this was a mistake.

The first flag there should have been the staff... not a fully Japanese sushi crew. That should have tipped us off. I ordered the Chirashi, figuring that it is a good way to get a feel for a place and my friend ordered their "maki sampler" with salmon, tuna and yellowtail. He also got a bowl of miso as we'd gotten a bit damp walking there.

Here is the litany of errors that we consumed this evening:

My Chirashi's Flaws: a Chirashi, by accepted definition, is a "laquered box, containing rice with sashimi on top". Mine was a dome of rice with half a dozen overly long pieces of utterly insipid fish (tuna, yellowtail, salmon, mackerel and I believe squid) topped off with a golfball-sized lump of tobiko. Considering the price of the object ($16.95) I was (and still am) rather put out. Compare this abomination to the chirashi served by Oishii (which if memory seves is $18.95). Pathetic. Do not waste your money on that object.

The Flaws of the Maki: My friend's maki were flawed about as seriously: the fish (tuna, salmon and yellowtail) were as insipid as mine. He had been asked whether he wanted "spicy" or normal and had incorrectly been given spicy rather than the unadulterated sushi he requested. The maki, rather than just being nori+rice+fish contained what seemed to be another seaweed object (crunchy, not nori, and pretty evilly tasteless). With this combination of errors, he fed most of it to me... then again, I eat damn near everything.

In all, I am extremely disappointed with Tsunami... and at $20 a head for truly lousy sushi, I think that in future we are better off going to Campus Convienence (the BU convienence shops), buying their $4.25/box maki and calling it a night. Rating for Tsunami: only take people there who you want to make rather annoyed...

If its been on Chowhound before, I apologize. I needed to vent.
