I went this moring at the crack of dawn (okay, 8:30) to Golden Gate Bakery to buy some of their famouse mooncakes. I figure this early in the morning there would be no lines. I was right, no lines, but no egg tarts either!

So to give away the punchline first, I don't think they are that great!!! I bought eight, four with one yolk each, four with no yolks. I paid $39 and change for eight cakes. Average price was around $5 each.
I compared their white lotus with the Dick Lee's white lotus. Maybe it's my personal preference (though my husband concurs) Dick Lee's white lotus paste is far superior. GG's white lotus is less oily granted, but it's also gummy and not very lotus tasting... I don't even know how to explain it properly. But GG's mooncake fillings are exactly what I didn't like about the department store brands, not fresh tasting.

I also bought red bean, coconut and golden ham fillings. So far only had red bean and white lotus paste. Wasn't impressed with red bean either.

I'm so disappointed, not to mentioned feeling jipped! Dick Lee's cakes averaged $3 each. I wishe they had egg tarts, but it was too early in the morning. I will be back again for their egg tarts. For for my part, their mooncakes is not worth the line or the money.

Next in line will be Neoplean's mooncakes. I will report back later.
