Trudy's breakfast report

It's Balcones Fault | Jan 29, 2003 10:32 AM

So, last weekend I was taken to Trudy's (South) for breakfast (I really didn't want to go, but I politely acquiesced to the choice of others). It had been a couple of years since I had last attempted to have an acceptable dining experience at this "Austin tradition," and this most recent experience has convinced me that my earlier decision never to dine there again was well-founded. This place is just plain awful! They should be sued for false advertising: "Spicy migas" and "spicy pico de gallo," indeed! They were bland and practically tasteless, but the beef and chicken fajita omelets were even worse. The omelets resembled something Luby's would prepare for those who wanted absolutely no seasonings in their food. The chipotle sauce had only the very, very faintest hint of roasted jalapenos and was the closest thing in texture, looks, and taste to simply the contents of a can of tomato sauce that I have ever been served in a restaurant. And, what the hell is this thing about not having strawberries and whipped cream toppings for the Belgian waffles or, for that matter, not being able to cook the pecan pieces in the waffle and only being able to serve them on the side?! I won't even get into the incompetence of the waitstaff, which was rather amazing in its blunders. Those in our party who had suggested Trudy's for breakfast were apologetic for making the rest of us endure such a horrid excuse for a restaurant and stated that they, too, would probably never return.

Of course, it could have been worse; we could have gone to a Serrano's.
