Dinner at The NoMad:
-Foie gras: very good, has a breakfast vibe w/ the sunflowers seeds tasting like granola, the brioche toast a tad too thick
-Lobster: excellent, I just wish there was slightly more sauce
-Brussels sprouts salad: excellent, great contrasting textures and flavors
-Tagliatelle: buttery and perfect al dente pasta but it was extremely salty (more on this)
Service was friendly but not as polished as EMP. I also had the 13-year Pappy van Winkle rye at the bar which was very tasty for $35 :-)
Lunch at Betony:
-Salad: about 6 lettuce leaves with dressing. I really don't get it. Maybe it's geared for anorexic models
-Poached egg w/ cavatelli: good, the broth was a little bit salty
-Scallops: very good but again the scallops were pretty salty (but not the other components)
-Poached striped bass: had a bite of this, it was good but nothing special
We had excellent service even with no reservation and the pisco sour was excellent. Perhaps lunch was not the right time to go to Betony.
Dinner at 15 East (Tasting Menu):
-Amuse bouches: excellent
-Chawan mushi: sublime, the best
-Nigiri: excellent, couldn't even finish it all which was an atrocity
-Lamb chops: good but the rice cake (?) that came with it was dry and too dense (things got a little bit hazy after some excellent glasses of Pol Roger champagne)
-Cold house-made soba noodle: excellent, the best I've had
Portions were extremely generous. I didn't even have room to eat dessert which came with the meal. Service was friendly and accommodating.
Lunch at ABC Kitchen
-Kale salad: I didn't order this but my dinner companion did and the staff decided to split it for us. I only took a few bites and it's just like any other kale salad which I'm totally over with
-Roasted brussels sprouts: excellent, nice mustardy sauce
-Akaushi cheese burger: excellent, never even heard of this breed, love the pickled jalapenos, supposedly this type of cattle lowers one's cholesterol level, more please
-Fries: good flavors but not crispy enough
We had very friendly and accommodating service.
About my gripes about the saltiness of some of the dishes, I find it truly baffling, like as if it's intentional. I especially love salty food, I even sprinkle salt on fruit so I don't think it's a matter of having a low tolerance. Is this some sort of new trend? Anyone has thoughts on this? The reason I ask is because I've tasted this level of saltiness at the Manresa Restaurant in CA (David Kinch's 2-Michelin star restaurant) a few years back and it seems as very intentional at the time.
Edit to add I also had excellent pizza at Don Pepe at Penn Station. :-) You New Yorkers are so very lucky with your pizza.
