My trip to LA

I just got back from LA and Orange County, and though it was not the most amazing chow experience ever (great food was not the priority of all of my companions), I owe some of you thanks for some great recs.

First of all, if you take a look at my post from December, you might wonder if I made it from LAX to Pico Blvd. in time to get to the stores before Shabbat.

Here's what I did. I took garyis's suggestion of NOT taking the freeway (very good idea). I managed to leave LAX by 1:00 and took La Cienega Blvd. all the way up to Pico. Took 30 minutes, not bad at all. Had plenty of time to go to Pico Kosher Deli and both of the big Kosher Supermarkets that are a few blocks east. I didn't end up buying any meat from Pico Kosher deli, but it looked very good. I did try the gefilte fish and the chopped liver, both good. Bought other items at the Kosher Markets for a nice dinner. So thanks for all the advice!!

In Pasadena we ate at two places worth mentioning: Had lunch at Yahaira's Cafe, I had fish burrito which was delicious, pretty reasonable prices and friendly staff. Everyone was happy here.

For dinner, randomly chose House of Halal Persian Kabobs in Pasadena because they had a TV to watch the Patriot's Game. The staff here were amazingly friendly, very accomodating to a group of college students from Boston. Food was very cheap and very good. I had the meatballs, served with rice, grilled vegetables, a drink and salad for 7 dollars or so. Delicious. Others tried hummus, greek salad (with AMAZING feta cheese, really creamy and flavorful). I'd be interested to hear how this place compares with other Persian food in the area. I sadly didn't get to eat any more after Pasadena.

Those are the things I most wanted to mention....a lot of the places I ate were in the realm of IHOP and Cold Stone Creamery (not bad, but, ya know...), also managed to eat some Japanese, but nothing amazing....next time I am in LA I hope to have more time to explore other options...
