Travels in Rappahanock County Report - Wine and Epicurious Cow

JoyS | Oct 18, 2004 12:35 PM

In search of pretty fall leaves (don't go now - wait another week or two), I headed to Rappahanock County this weekend.

I'd like to thank the chowhound who recommended the Epicurious Cow (sorry -- I forget who it was!!). We picked up some great great great smoked mozzarella chese there. It had an Epicurious Cow label, so I'm assuming they make it in-house? If anyone is ever near there, you really should swing by for some great cheese (and other goodies, although we were there too late for their sandwiches, etc).

We also stopped by the extremely busy Rappahanock Cellars winery. I've never seen a VA winery so crazed with people (it was even busier than Napa/Sonoma wineries on a weekday, and many Oregon wineries on the weekend). Although I haven't been to Barboursville or Kluge yet, I've been to several other VA wineries and believe this is high up on the list for VA reds in terms of quality. I enjoyed their 2002 Meritage, as well as the light and fruity 2003 Noblesse Rouge. They weren't pouring the 2003 Norton yet, but they said it will soon be on their list.
