Total Wine: $30.00 Off Coupons In Today's Washington Post!!

I have posted on here before about the once every six months incredible bargains at Total when you are willing to buy at least $150.00 worth of wine. Well it is TODAY! In the packet of ads of today's Post is a flyer for Total. When you open it up there are a number of coupons including one for $30.00 off. '99
Estancia cabernet is $17.99 bottle at Safeway, Giant, most stores. The SALE price at Total is $12.49. If you buy a case (you may have to buy a thirteenth bottle depending on the cashier; some of whom also give a 10% discount by the way for the case purchase!) the total is approx. $150. Minus the $30.00 is $120. That is TEN DOLLARS PER BOTTLE FOR THAT WHICH OTHERS SELL IT FOR $17.99!
Kendall Jackson Chardonnay is on sale for $8.99. If you buy 17 bottles that is $152.83 minus $30.00 which equals $123.83 or $7.28 per bottle for a wine that other stores sell for DOUBLE!!!! (Take a look at the price of this wine if you see it on a store shelf today. Then remember you can buy it for $7.28. Half of what you will see.)
Chateua Souverain '99 Merlot is $15.99. X 12 equals $191.88 less $30.00 is $161.88 or $13.49 a bottle for a TWENTY TWO DOLLAR BOTTLE OF WINE elsewhere that the Wine Spectator gave 92 points to. If you like merlot take a serious look at this. This bottle is as good as most $40.00 bottles. (I have five cases already and yes, it ages well for several years.)(MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE ;99; the '98 is not as good!)
There are a lot of wines on sale at Total with absoluely incredible bargains with these coupons. If you're really into shopping and can "invest" several hundred dollars plan on going to several stores and buying several cases. This only happens once every six months. In combination with Virginia's 4.5% tax this is a better deal than even the absolute best deal from Calvert Woodley when you factor in the tax.
BUT BE CAREFUL! A LOT of bottles at Total will not be on sale. Take the flyer with you. Total's regular price on Chateau Souverain '99 merlot is $24.99 which is two dollars HIGHER than the list price elsewhere.
Also Total will give rainchecks so if they are sold out (and after this post don't expect to find any Souverain or Estancia after, say, today) you can come back and pick it up for the special price later.
To the best of my knowledge this is the absolute best deal on wine of any store in the United States. Today only for the $30.00 offcoupon which expires on the 15th of September.
It is because of this particular sale that I went from about 50 bottles to over 500 several years ago when the coupons ran weekly. I've now started to drink some of that which I bought then ('97 Estancia was about $7.90) and it is absolutely delicious. With a couple years of bottle aging many wines really do improve. I have '96 Chateau St. Michelle merlot which was a mediocre year for a relatively inexpensive Washington wine. It listed three years ago for about $13.00. I bought it for around $7.50. A month ago I saw this wine on the menu in a Seattle restaurant for $55.00. But most importantly, with the three years of bottle aging, it is drinking like a wine that costs even more. Let me mention this again: some cashiers may require that your total be $150.00 rather than, say, $149.88. But that's all right. Just buy another bottle to qualify. The reason that I buy cases is that SOME CASHIERS WILL GIVE YOU A TEN PER CENT CASE DISCOUNT ON TOP OF THE SALE PRICE, ON TOP OF THE $30.00 OFF COUPON. They are not suppose to but it does happen. The coupon says there is no case discount with its use. But some of them do for a full case of one wine, not for a mixed case.
Last, a bonus for those that have read this far: Total has a new coupon which I have never seen before as part of this or any package: $5.00 off on selected merlots. Included in this group is Chateau Souverain '99 merlot for TEN DOLLARS AND NINETY NINE CENTS!!! That's even cheaper than the $30.00 off coupon. That, dear people, is LESS THAN HALF PRICE FOR A WINE THAT THE WINE SPECTATOR GAVE 92 POINTS TO. Probably the highest rating I have ever seen for an American merlot under $25.00 a bottle. And you can buy it for $10.99!!!!! But there is a six bottle limit. If you don't know anything about wine but just like to drink a red once in a while. Trust me. Get the coupon and go buy six bottles of '99 Chateau Souverain merlot. Don't buy one just to try it. Buy six. You will never find this again.
But remember this real "loss leader" (and it is) is to get you in the store to buy wine that is not on sale or super markdown. Be careful at what ELSE you buy.
