Top Round Roast Beef - Juicy Meaty Goodness

I almost don’t want to tell people about this place because it is quick and easy to go there to eat right now, but I am so impressed that I just have to share. Top Round Roast Beef serves New York State style (Buffalo is the mecca for beef on weck), Beef on Weck, which is sliced hot roast beef, with jus and some “shake” (these are spices shaken on?) on a Kimmelweck roll (a roll usually a Kaiser-type, topped with salt and caraway seeds). Sounds simple, but when done right it is spectacular. And Top Round Roast Beef on the corner of Olympic and LaBrea does it right. They only serve one main dish, beef on Weck. They offer several variations of it with some different toppings. I went for the classic beef only and topped it with spicy mustard and a wonderfully painful, hot, yet oh-so delicious grated horseradish – they have other toppings of course like BBQ, creamy horseradish, too. My sandwich showed up seemingly within seconds of placing the order. I put my toppings on and ate it immediately. I was so blown away by it, I just had to have another sandwich. This NEVER happens. But, I ordered a second one and downed it just as quickly. Yes, it was just as good as the first. The TRRB version of Beef on Weck isn’t as large as the NY versions which can be massive, but oh is it delicious. A minor note – this is not a “real” Kimmelweck roll, it’s smaller and doesn’t have the same texture. But it is a very good roll nonetheless, with the salt and caraway topping providing enough similarity to make it a delicious compliment to the sandwich. My friend ordered the curly cheese fries. Normally I hate curly fries. They are usually inferior – they don’t stay hot, and they’re almost always lacking in the crispiness department. These were delicious! And actually crisp. They are fried in “100% beef fat” and are offered in some gooey, drippy variations including “dirty fries” and fries with gravy. TRRB apparently makes their own “cheese wiz” sauce and I have to admit it was impressive on the fries. I can’t stress enough how satisfying this dinner was. The service was smiley, helpful and extremely quick. You order at either an outside window or walk inside to a counter and can sit either inside or on the covered outside patio. My sandwich/sandwiches were hot and juicy and I left VERY happy. Even if you’re not from New York, you should get acquainted with the delicacy known as beef on weck and head to Top Round Roast Beef. They also sell authentic frozen custard, and offer it “concrete style.” I didn’t try it so I can’t review it. Hopefully other hounds will add reviews of the custard to this string. I would only tell the owners that they should put a sign outside mentioning this because if you order outside at the window you’ll never see that they offer this delicacy. Again, try this place, you’ll be hooked. But get take-out so I don’t have to worry about long lines or getting a seat. I’m dreading the notion that there will eventually be crowds but I can’t help but want this place to succeed so I can have delicious juicy and addicting Beef on Weck in Los Angeles.
