Those who yearn for *real* udon (and not the mediocre stuff served at Mifune, Hotei, etc.) should check out Tombo located at 212 2nd Avenue in San Mateo, between "B" Street and Ellsworth. The udon is hand-made and Kansai style (a bit flatter noodle and lighter broth). They also serve sushi and great tsumami (small plate snacks to go with beer or sake). They have a mostly Japanese clientele and are looking to get more diverse customers. It's run by a lovely couple from Osaka and has been open for about six months. There is also a branch of the restaurant in Osaka. Not much atmosphere but wonderful food.
