Pigletthepug (and someone else previously, can't remember who, sorry) mentioned the Tomyum Noodle soup at Rod Dee in a noodle thread a few weeks ago (the previous mention had been in a spicy food thread, I think)....
Anyway, nursing a transAtlantic cold from my Amsterdam trip, I made a run to Trader Joe's to stock up on soup, and lo and behold, I saw a parking spot right in front of Rod Dee(on Beacon St)... Who am I to not see that as a sign?
I hopped out, and ordered the TY soup with seafood, pet, pet....Even from inside the plastic container, I could smell the reek of a fermented anchovy sauce steaming thru the bag...And I mean that in the best of ways!
At home, I dumped the separately packed rice-stick noodles, liberally topped with chopped peanuts, and already softening their pile of bean sprouts into a bowl, and poured the contents of the plastic container on top...The broth was sharp and tangy, the taste of the salty anchovy paste going head to head with those searing peppers, balanced by a hint of sweet. Steamed fish balls, fried fish cake, squid and shrimp lasted thru all the broth and noodles, and I was sweating profusely by the end...Sometimes, I think Rod Dee's spices are a little under-integrated, but in this instance, tasting each and every one really kept this from lapsing into Thai broth mediocrity. Every bite was full of flavor, and I was full of soup. Another regular stop on the winter soup parade, for $6.25...Thanks for the tip!
