While strolling down West 4th Street in the West Village last night, my wife noticed that Titou, the reasonably-priced French bistro (and sister restaurant to Tartine, just down the block) appeared to be closed; opaque paper was covering up the windows, and there were no signs of life about the place.
A quick phone call this morning to Titou's old number confirmed the closing; the new answering machine message announces the name of the restaurant as "Extra Virgin," and informs us that they will be opening in April.
I eat at Tartine with some regularity (we live nearby), so I'll try to find out more about what happened. Kind of a shame; Titou was always a reliable brunch destination, and also more than adequate for a quick meal in the evenings without breaking the bank.
