Tipping in Dim Sum Restaurants

I'm curious: how many people here leave a full 15-20%% tip in dim sum restaurants? I always used to think that dim sum restaurants followed different tipping rules, because you weren't really being "waited on" at your table by anyone, so I would normally just leave a token amount for whoever was clearing up, but we went to Gum Fong out in Flushing today, and were literally scolded by the head waiter for not leaving enough money on the table on our way out (it was creepy -- he stood in front of the cashier's counter, as if he was inspecting everyone who was leaving). Have I really been egregiously shortchanging my dim sum waiters for all these years, or is there actually some basis in custom for tipping less in dim sum restaurants? Opinions would be very welcome.
