I wandered down Piedmont Ave yesterday to see if anything had replaced Cafe Rooz and this place was a very pleasant surprise. It's been open six weeks, sells Sightglass coffee (and beans) and a nice variety of in-house baked goods of the muffin and slice variety. Also a few chocolate confectionary types things like peanut butter cups. (They call themselves a chocolatier too, but there was barely anything there when I was in, around midday.)
My coffee was fantastic -- and god knows, I know nothing about being a barista, but it was sweet and complex and not bitter and thin like the espresso-based drinks I've occasionally had at other places that tout quality beans. Will definitely be back. Nice to see Monkey Forest Road doesn't have to be the only standard bearer for well-made "third wave" coffee this side of Oakland.
There is generous sidewalk seating and roughly the same indoor seating configuration as Rooz -- long skinny counter, long skinny line of chairs along the opposite wall. No Wifi, nice sounding sound system (again, not my area of expertise, although I did think the music in Rooz was oppressive), but definitely people working solo or quietly in groups.
Hope this one can make it.
