Hula’s Island Grill is oft voted tops in happy hour on the Monterey Peninsula. On Tuesdays, happy hour lasts all night from opening at 2pm until close. A few weeks ago a friend and I met here for an afternoon drink, a first time for both of us.
Spicy edamame – My favorite of the three, given a nice sear, tossed with chile flakes and garlic, and served hot. Very flavorful and addictive.
Samurai beef sticks – Nicely marinated, juicy and tender beef kabobs.
Abalone style calamari – My friend’s favorite, giant squid steaks with deep-fried in an egg wash then cut into fingers and doused with a lemony-garlic sauce. A second dipping sauce added more pizzaz.
Drinks were colorful, and not the dilute versions that are the bane of happy hour offerings nearly everywhere.
Hula’s is located a couple blocks from Cannery Row. The food and drink are better than they need to be. I’d return for a quick bite and fun atmosphere.
