Tierras Mexicanas in Astoria

Man, the place was desolate on Saturday night - that never stimulates my appetite. We got there at around 8:30, saw no other diners at all there during the course of a reasonably leisurely dinner. Just one guy sipping a beer and eating chips.

We were theorizing that it was due to 31st St. being all messed up with the construction under the El, or maybe people were saving their big dining blowout for Mother's Day. Or was there some scandale that I missed completely? In any case, it was a shame, we had a very good meal. I worry that the place will cease to be.

As ever, the guac was great, the mains excellent. My companions had the Tampiqueña (which drew a rave), the Mariscada, and a fish I can't remember. I ordered a special off the Mother's Day menu, lamb chops in ??? sauce. The lamb itself was the best I'd had in quite a while. The sauce was chipotle-ish, very tasty but a bit overpowering for the mild lamb. I cleaned my plate.

I know this place has been discussed before, with mixed reviews, but I've liked it the few times I've eaten there and would be sorry if it went belly up. So I'm writing to remind people who've been meaning to try it but haven't gotten around to it that now's the time.

FYI, it's at the corner of 31st St and 36th Ave. Full license, and darn good Margaritas.
