Thanksgiving Turkeys

Yes, I know its still summer but I'd like to give everyone a heads up. At the Kingston farmers market, North Winds Farm had a sign which said they would take deposits starting in Sept. It's $20 and you can specify how heavy you want the bird to be. For those of you who want to wait, they sell about 2000 to Adams and you can place an order there one or two weeks before the holiday. Now if their turkeys are anything like their chickens.....
Also, during the summer they are selling four cows a week to various supermarkets including Adams, the IGA in Red Hook and several others in the area. A number of the restaurants in the area are also buying sides and butchering it themselves The meat that they sell at the farmers market is frozen. They told me that they just can't handle it any other way.
Another farmer at the market was selling various cuts of fresh venison, elk and bison. I don't remember if the latter two were fresh or frozen.
Also, there were two organic farmers there. One of them was selling eggs. They looked completely different that the ones you find in high end supermarkets--the dozen eggs you buy are different sizes and colors. I make a plain omelet the following morning and it was out of this world.
The food you buy at farm stands and farm markets are so much better than what you can get at Whole Foods and other uppity stores.
