Scooped up some leftover Thai Angel take-out last week, and was pleasantly surprised - tonight's visit seals the deal.
Of the three Thai places in this part of Astoria (30th ave. vicinity) this one seems to be the best.
The atmosphere is very nice - very Brooklyn a la Smith street. Only slightly less trendy and mobbed, and a bit more laid back.
Green Papaya salad was excellent. Spicy and tangy - a generous portion.
Scallop Jungle Curry - Outstanding. The scallops were tender and bursting with fresh flavor. The sauce had a bit of a sour bite to it. Not extremely spicy, but had a kick (people at other tables seemed to be gasping from excessive heat - we saw no evidence of this, however).
Shrimp Pad Thai - Quite good. MUCH better than either Thai Pavillion's or Ubol's. They don't conceive of this as a spicy dish here - which I see as a bit of a drawback. I'm sure they'd make it that way if you asked but we didn't. Still, the flavors were wonderfully balanced. What's more, the shrimp were larger than usual, and fresh. Shrimp at Ubol's and Thai Pavillion NEVER ever seems fresh to me - always a bit off.
The dessert list is disappointing - no sticky rice dish, and mostly ice-cream based. The "Fried Banana Ice Cream" is really vanilla ice cream accompanying three banana egg roll type things. Not at all bad, but certainly not inspired.
Service is friendly, although almost non-existant after the main course is served - probably still finding their proper rhythm, having just opened last week.
Prices seem fair, but no bargain. This is true of the other Thais in town, as well. Thai in Brooklyn, or at Sripraphai, is just cheaper (and at Sripraphai, probably better). But my new opinion is: it isn't really that cheap to eat in Astoria period. Don't know why it took me a year to figure that out.
Thai Angel is on 30th Avenue, I think between 34th and 35th (maybe betw. 35th and 36th). Closest train is W to 30th Ave.
