Returning home from a recent visit to Austin, I stopped at Louis Mueller's Bar-be-que in Taylor. As good a meal as I've had in a long time. They haven't lost their touch. The meal reaffirmed in my mind that they are the best BBQ joint in a State that's full of good ones.
Great old building that looks like the inside hasn't been painted within the lifetime of even the oldest patron. Quite authentic. The food experience starts when you order. The man cutting the meat with give you a small chunk of brisket crust to eat while he cuts your meat. I ordered one slice of brisket and two sausages (down from two of each when I was younger and thinner). When you order the brisket, they ask if you'd like it very lean or with a little fat. Naturally, I wanted a bit of fat in mine, and that's the way it came. My girlfriend asked for hers very lean, and so it was.
I still think they have the best sausage in the world, and believe me, I've had sausage nearly everywhere I've been. The sausage as a bit more spicy than I remembered it, but it was still rich, flavorful and meaty. The extra spice was, if anything, an improvement.
