3 of us had lunch today at New Woey Loy Goey in Chinatown ..... we were there right when they opened for lunch at 11am. Prompt service - brought us tea and the menus. Took a few minutes to be astounded by the low prices and a pretty big selection of rice plates. Had 4 rice plates for $3.95 - Curry Chicken, Szechuan Bean Cake, Tomato Beef & Bean Cake Beef. 20 other plates for $4.50 - standards like: Kung Pao Chicken, Sweet & Sour Pork, Pork Spare Ribs with Black Beans, Beef Tendon with Turnip, Beef with Bitter Melon .... For $5.25 Oxtail Stew, Prawns with Tender Greens, Beef Tripe with Black Beans, Filet of Flounder with Tender Greens or Lamb with Dried Bean Cake. And for $6.95 you could have Oyster & Roast Pork .......
The plates were generous ..... big portion of rice and a sizeable portion of the entree as well. The house soup was pork and winter melon - quite good.
We had the Chicken & Mushroom plate: nice big plump chinese mushrooms, and tender chicken ..... The bitter melon & beef with black beans was well prepared: beef -tender and the melon a nice bright green but still cooked ..... the black beans cut the bitterness somewhat. My curried beef tongue was OK ...... the tongue was tender, there was a lot of vegetables mixed in to the curry sauce - which had a little bit of spice in the finish. If you want a bargain lunch - this menu definitely has some room to explore.
Definitely a bare bones atmosphere - about average for Chinatown.
