I just had to once again sing the praises of one of my favorite "local's secret", Table 34 on Warm Springs Bl. I took a friend there for the first time for dinner last night and it was a wonderful experience.
He got there a little early and waited at the bar; the bartender was friendly and he said she mixed a great drink.
We both had the Manhattan clam chowder, which was almost more like cioppino. A rich, but not fatty, red broth, plenty of clams and also chunks of fish. That and a salad would have made a meal. He also had the smoked salmon (they smoke their own salmon) over a potatoe galette. The crunchy/warm and silky/cold combination was perfect.
I also had the night's special, a halibut filet atop homemade noodles that were swimming in a rich broth. Again, the combination was sheer delight.
He ordered a date bar with homemade ice cream. I stole a couple of bites and was amazed. It didn't sound that spectacular, but melted in your mouth and once again was a symphony of silky sweetnes.
Wow! I feel so lucky to live so close to this gem. I generally go for lunch, but dinner was even better.
PS They have gift certificates available on restaurant.com, which usually has half off sales. So I got a $25 cert for $5.
