Too SWEET Thai - (formerly Little Basil waste)

I'm sure many chowhounds have their favorite Thai spots. But do ANY of you find that the average neighborhood Thai restaurant prepares its food too sweet?? At first, it seemed that the traditionally sweet dishes were 'overly' sweet. Now, it seems that even the dishes that should NOT be sugary are STILL doused in sweet sauce. Unless the preparation description includes lemon or lime, I inevitably wind up with a dish that seems indistinguishable from dessert! Do you think that perhaps Thai restauranteurs are basing their recipes on America's sweet-tooth -- giving us what they think we want? Am I ordering the wrong dishes?? I would love to enjoy Thai food -- the dishes always SOUND wonderful - and I'm sure down in Chinatown or in certain neighborhoods, it is superb. But I have been at too many places that serve it up like "American-Thai." Faced with the 'sickly sweet' dilemma, I tend not to even go to Thai places, anymore - which I regret. (I live on the Upper West Side, but DO venture outside my turf!) ;->
