Too-sweet corn

Will someone tell me why practically the only corn one can find around here tastes like the entire cob was rolled in sugar? Too too sweet.

I'm referring to fresh corn, mostly from Jersey, sold at the Union Square Greenmarket. There used to be different kinds of corn, including the great Silver Queen. Now it's all "supersweet" white and gold and mixed.

Where's Betty Fussell when we need her?
