I grabbed a friend and finally visited Sushi Mishima, an "under the radar" eatery in bland strip mall @ 55th St. & Thomas. I've driven by it for a couple of years, wondering why someone would frequent a sushi place next to a thrift store. But some other hounds on here mentioned it was good, so I finally took a visit. Glad I did.
The place is a bit bigger than expected, though not too big. It's very clean and minimalist - no fish swimming under the floor, fancy decor or blaring rock and roll. About 8 tables and a long sushi bar, behind which is the jolly Japanese chef who tends to his sushi making or grilling meats on a small BBQ. I'm assuming the other employee is his wife, a high energy woman who is very friendly. Beyond sushi they offer some grilled specials (salmon, steak, chicken - and, oddly enough, lamb in a wine sauce and osco bucco). I look forward to going back and trying some of these - but we thought on our first visit we'd go with Sushi.
We were there at lunchtime, which is a great bargain. A sushi or sashimi lunch includes 6 kinds of fish (chef's choice - but you can make specific requests) for under $10 per person. This price also included a big bowl of rich miso soup, followed by a salad, a bowl of rice and he presented us with carved oranges and melon for a sweet ending. We were both stuffed. Lunch is server M-F from 11:30-2:30 (Not on Sat. or Sun - which is too bad as I'd like to take friends there who can't break from work during the week).
That said, I looked over the Dinner offerings it. If you go with a set meal it's priced at around $20 per person (more portions than lunch). Of course you can order individual pieces as well.
If you are in the area, give it a try. As mentioned, it's not glam and full of trendy folks like Stingray or Raw just a few miles away. Rather, it's a nice, simple neighborhood place run by a Japanese couple who wish to share their food and smiles.
