I hesitated about posting this here because I want to keep this all to myself. However, it's just too good not to share.
We went to MOMO-YAMA Sushi yesterday, a tiny place tucked in the Glamorgan Shopping Centre. A friend recommended it for the deep-fried soft shell crab.
I have to say I grew up in Vancouver and have been spoiled by the sushi there. So I was ecstatic to find Momo-Yama.
The deep-fried soft shell crab was amazing. Lightly breaded panko, fried just right and a TON of juicy crab meat. Four pieces for $8.95.
I ordered the chirashi sushi, pieces of sashimi over a bed of sushi rice. (Chirashi means "scattered") I always order this if I see it on a menu, because I really think it tests the chef. Usually chirashi sushi should feature the restaurant's best and freshest fish and it shows off what the chef can do with presentation. (Sadly I forgot my camera this time, but that means I HAVE to go back)
Momo-yama's chirashi sushi blew me away. Three huge pieces of tuna, one fatty tuna, two salmon, two calamari (quite unusual), two octopus, one halibut, then some tamago, bean curd, and shredded daikon for texture and to round out the presentation. All that for $12.50!
The sashimi was extremely fresh and tasty. A lot of the other tables were devouring huge plates of sushi rolls. They also looked great.
My boyfriend had chicken katsu. For $8.50 he got THREE gigantic chicken fillets with rice and miso soup. Also fried perfectly like the crab.
The menu is not huge, but has all your basic sushi rolls, sashimi and teriyakis.
I mentioned tiny. The place has two booths, maybe four tables, and a few seats at the sushi bar. But it was packed and a steady stream of people getting take-out.
At one point, I heard them telling people take-out would take 90 minutes. I give them marks for warning customers beforehand, unlike a lot of places.
The sushi chef was going non-stop, but you could tell he was really enjoying himself.
Go! Go! And try the chirashi!
