SuRa - too good to be a secret

NYgal | Mar 20, 2006 01:26 PM

I had my second dinner last night around 8pm at SuRa, on 9th St between 3rd and 4th Aves. For half the meal there were two others in the restaurant; for the other half we were alone. The food was great, it's reasonably priced and the service couldn't have been nicer. What gives?

We split an appetizer of kim chee jon - basically finely chopped kim chee and batter fried like a pancake. It was excellent. Last time I had the korean pear and pork appetizer - also excellent. We both had bibimbop for an entree; they do a great job with it and it's as cheap as the place at St. Marks and 1st, but much fresher tasting.

I'm starting to get a real soft spot in my heart for this place and I'm worried it's going to close. Are there bad things I'm missing about it? The waitress readily admitted that they cater to the western palate, so maybe the korean purists are steering clear in favor of K-town. But really, all the EV locals should hit this place up for a weeknight dinner.
