The happy and full judges of the North-South Dim Sum Civil War were treated to some of the very best dim sum we have experienced. There were more "perfect 6's" than at any place we have gone! The Har Gow were mostly 6's and 5's (caveats mentioned "Too much shrimp!"-a real embarassment of riches) The chicken feet in back bean sauce got 6's from five of the six judges. They were huge, perfectly braised so that the meat fell off the bones. A real delicasy- My mouth waters as I am writing this. The Taro Fried dumpling was crusty on the exterior with creamy and slightly chunky taro, balanced by a good amount of tasty meat filling. 5's and one 4. The siu mai were huge and juicy. They rated from 4 to 6.The turnip cake was just average. The shrimp rice noodle roll had a nice texture, also with large shrimp mostly 5's and 4. The spareribs had a slightly "off taste" to me and this was reflected in its' 2's and 3's. Custard tarts. average 3's and 4's. The extra dishes (and we had a lot of them!) Were mostly 5's and 6's. They were xiao long bao (mine had soup in it) Fried crispy tofu skins.which were wonderfully crunchy, with tasty stuffing, and not a bit oily. The best and largest meaty chicken wings (forget what you may have tried in your local takeout)these were perfectly spiced and juicy and I gave them a 6. The chinese donut (very cruller like) was moist eggy, crispy with crunchy sugar all over it. The sweet black sesame dumplings oozed its' wonderful smokey sweet flavor. Try the chive dumpling, perfect skin, perfect filling. The custard bun had a crackly exterior which was an excellent juxtaposition to the custardy interior (the best of its' type)The mango pudding was almost perfumed! Did we detect a hint of vanilla? All in all Joy Luck was a revelation. It is a beautiful large restaurant, Packed with very happy and contented people.Joy Luck Place...From 280 take Wolfe Road exit and head East. It is in an upscale Asian Shopping Center with a Ranch 99 Market. Located on the left (North) side of Wolfe, about a half mile or so from 280. Definitely worth a visit!...and Please take me with you!
