Greetings, fellow hounds: here I am in San Diego, visiting old and dear friends. Due to rave posts here a while back, I had recommended that my friends hie themselves off to Super Cocina; they've been several times since then. A couple of nights ago I got to try it for the first time. All I can say is WOW!
With nary a taco or burrito in evidence, Super Cocina is better than just a superficial taste of Mexico: it's a real taste of Mexico's home cooking. *Guisados* ranging from chicharron en salsa verde to pollo borracho--and a marvelous pozole--left me feeling like I was in the home kitchen of a highly skilled cook. It's quite difficult to find cooking of this kind in Mexican restaurants in Mexico; I can tell that I'm going to be craving one or two of the things I ate long after I'm back on my home turf.
One complaint: 1) microwaved tortillas, a particular pet peeve of mine. I would think that if asked, staff would throw some on the comal to heat. Next time I go, I'll ask.
I promised the owners that I'd be back before I leave for Mexico mid-month. What a treat--if you haven't been, go soon. Let's all go!
