After reading several good reviews here about the Sunday brunch at Jar (http://www.thejar.com/index.html ), we decided to give it a try today. All-in-all we liked it and will, I think, be adding it to the weekend breakfast rotation.
We made a reservation for 10 am, but needn't have bothered. From 10 when we arrived, until about 11:30 when we left, there was at no point more than four or five other tables occupied. (Maybe it gets busy later on?) One of the things that I think is tough about dinner at Jar is that the space can be quite loud; the low customer density this morning took care of that problem and made for a peaceful and relaxing brunch.
Anyway, we were seated immediately on arrival, and given a bread board with butter and two large wedges of toasted pecan caramel sticky bun/bread. Outstanding! Plus, they'll give you more if you ask! This is, in my view, pretty much the perfect way to start breakfast. Ordered fresh oj and coffee/tea, and looked over the menu (http://www.thejar.com/jar_menu_br.html ). (Fwiw, the online menu doesn't match their current brunch menu exactly, but it's close.)
The Missus and I shared an order of scrambled eggs with chorizo and an order of corn pancakes with Vermont maple sryop. The corn pancakes were exceptionally good. Nice and crisp around the edges, with great flavor. I've been looking for really good corn pancakes in LA, and think I've found my spot. These may be the best I've tried locally. It's not Polly's (http://www.pollyspancakeparlor.com/hi... ), but still damn good. The scrambled eggs with chorizo were fine, and the portion is generous. As with their dinner menu, however, everything is served a la carte, so the eggs don't come with hash browns or toast, which must be ordered separately. (Not sure why, but I find this annoying at breakfast whereas it doesn't bother me at lunch/dinner.)
The couple we were with ordered the roast beef hash with scrambled eggs, and steak and eggs. I got to try the hash, and thought it was excellent. I like the addition of mushrooms, and the beef, deriving as it no doubt does, from their delicious pot roast, was wonderful. Also, the serving was enormous, easily enough for two meals. Didn't try the steak and eggs, but it looked fine. Still, if I were Jonesing for steak and eggs, I think the Pacific Dining Car (http://www.pacificdiningcar.com/ ) downtown would still be my first choice.
Beverages were fine, and the service was attentive and helpful. Breakfast for four came to about $100, before tip. A bit on the expensive side, but still, a nice, elegant setting, good service, and very good food. Definitely worth a try if you like that sort of thing.
