Tried a new place today purely by passing by and seeing the sign. "Sugar and Salt" is a Columbian restaurant that opened in Greenville, SC in October. Very near the intersection of East North St and Pleasantburg and across from Bob Jones. Very, very clean and bright. Decorated in primary colors, my wife said it was like eating in a preschool. The food is good and cheap. Empanadas are generously sized and only $1.00. The Arepas Rellenas (kind of like a corn cake sandwich) were loaded with meat and were only $4.00. When I ordered beef I assumed it would be hamburger but it was like a pork roast style beef. Pretty amazing for $4. After I ordered I saw the special Columbian hot dog on the menu (hot dog with pineapple sauce, potato chip crumbs, cheese, and quail eggs for $.4. You can easily eat pretty well for $5 or $6. Beats the Hades out of fast food. Washed down with a Columbiana soda (looks and tastes like creme soda), it was mighty fine.
For dessert the wife and I ordered the "obleas" which is advertised as a "flour waffle with caramel". Very, very good. The "flour waffle" is actually a very, very thin ice cream cone style texture and this was illed with caramel. The wife and I ate a lot of food for less than $16 total.
I will be back.
