Just went to the Sugar Hill Bistro on 145th, between Convent and Amsterdam.
Since I'm new to the area I was very excited to try this very swanky place, and they recently advertised a 20% discount in the Times.
We arrived around 10 pm and sat in the parlor level bar. There were plentiful tables intially, but the live jazz began around 10:30, and the place was packed after that.
Had a very well dressed spinach salad with crumbled goat cheese, roasted portabellas, and thin slivers of tempura shitake. The combination of tangy, earthy, buttery and crispy was delicious.
The main dishes were underwhelming. Salmon with garlic mashed potatoes was huge but completely underseasoned. My dining companion's duck was yummy with sweet potatoes, collards, and a fruity sauce; but a little monotonous in tone, too sweet.
This place just opened, so I'm hoping there's room for improvement. The music was wonderful, and the service good. Whether only as a jazz bar or a dining destination, its a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
