I had given up looking for authentic austrian strudel years ago, finding mostly frozen puff-pastry varieties, or braided bun-like things.
Last night on Foodnetwork they played an episode of "Roker on the Road" which highlighted the Old Vienna Strudel Co in Culvery City. I nearly fell out of my seat when I saw on TV that the Old Vienna company makes their strudels the same way my grandmother used to! Yes! Just what I was looking for!
Today during lunch I took the trek to Culver City to have some strudel. I was really hoping they had cabbage, but I wanted to try their apple as well. They had a few varieties of apple available fresh, and other varieties, including cabbage, available frozen. A 12" section is $10.50.
After what took way too long for a 10 mile drive home, I was finally able to taste the apple strudel. Yumm!! And it even tastes better than my grandmather's.
If you'd like to try some authenic austrian strudel, definately check this place out.
