Other than sweet corn tamales, I had never tasted a tamale de dulce, so I was very excited to see that the All-Star Tamales stand at the Friday Old Oakland farmers' market now sells strawberry tamales. Like their sweet corn tamales, these are smaller than the savory tamales and cost half the price.
The ingredients listed are strawberry preserves, raisins, and walnuts. I was expecting chunks of preserves to be nestled inside the masa, but instead found that the preserves had been blended into the masa so that the entire tamale was a pastel pink. Is this usual?
I didn't like this tamale as much as their excellent sweet corn tamale, but it was fun to try.
