I just noticed that Amazon.com has begun accepting
orders for an as yet unpublished update to Jane and
Michael Stern's "Eat Your Way Across the USA."
I'll continue to buy several copies of every book of
theirs that I can find, but I do miss the days when
each restaurant description was in itself an
entertaining little work of art (remember pastry that
was "the work of a vengeful plasterer?"), and each
book was delightful bedtime food pornography, even
absent any immediate culinary or travel plans.
I give them credit for restoring maps to the first
edition of EYW (imagine, the last "Roadfood" was an
auto travel guide, organized alphabetically by state
without any maps!), but, though I haven't actually
counted restaurants or words, the reviews seemed fewer
in number and the descriptions shorter, more generic,
and less playful than their earlier work.
Speaking of maps, was Maine "#12" supposed to be the
Ogunquit Lobster Pound? Does anyone else care to
venture a guess?
