St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador Region -- Fish and Chips Champion

By the Beach Restaurant and Takeout, 1608 Thorburn Road, St. Philip's, telephone 709-895-8800, is the new fish and chips champion of the St. John's region. I think they close most days at 8:00 p.m., and while I'm not certain what time they open, I'd hazard to guess it's 11:00 a.m.

You'll need access to a car or you'll need a lift. A taxi ride to By the Beach is not recommended unless you're comfortable with a $30-50 cab fare either way, and taxis are hard to come by once out there. Whatever way you get out there, it's easy to find: just continue driving straight out Thorburn Road in the direction of St. Philip's until you run out of road (do not make the mistake of going up Tucker's Hill Road when you get to the fork near the end of the road; go down the hill towards the small harbour). It's good. It's very, very good. So fresh, you'll swear you can taste the sea.

Quite a few years ago, I was far from sold. I have returned twice in the last six weeks and can assure you that it does live up to the hype. Highly recommended and well worth the 20-30 minute drive out there.
