I know this place is more for the scene, than the food..
but beyond the controversial 3-star review from NYT, it seemed to be
well reviewed in other publications and online sites, also some friends who are 'picky' eaters seemed to really like it...
So, last week we had a chance to go, since most people were out of town. Maybe the people who run the kitchen were on vacation too. I'm actually not that picky with food and can put up with alot before I have a bad thing to say, but I don't understand why this place is so popular. All of the dishes we tried were so bad to below average..ex: Crab/pomelo salad: flavorless, tasted like raw bean sprouts. Shaved Tuna with tapioca:overly salty and drenched in a thick sauce, lacked any control of spices at all. Coconut rice: overcooked to a mash-potato consistency, decent flavor but very mushed.
Even the cocktails were bad, my 'pattaya' cocktail had a overly tart
syrup condensed at the bottom portion of the drink, which rendered half the cocktail undrinkable..unless I was suppose to mix it like lemonade or iced tea.
The service however was very pleasant. We did not complain, though
we left two dishes almost completely uneaten except for like 2 bites.
