Spec's wine courses

It's with some regret that I crossed off my calendar the plans to go to a wine tasting tonight put on by Spec's, but it reminded me to share this with chowhounds...

If you're in the Houston area, I recommend Spec's wine tasters. They're held at L'Alliance Francaise, the French cultural place in Montrose (but I'm not saying anything about the French today, this post is about Spec's).

Contact Spec's to get on the e-mail mailing list about the events. They take place every few weeks. The wine buyer or manager usually runs them. I went to the port tasting. We tried about 12 ports, which ranged in price from $10 to $60 a bottle, maybe more. I learned a lot about port, needless to say. Also drank a lot of port. My only regret was that I had to restrict intake in order to drive home sober! Next time I'll get a ride there and take a cab home.

Anyway, other tastings involve cabernets (tonight), burgundies, and the others.

For another posting, I can talk about Spec's Warehouse downtown, one of the best wine and liquor stores around. Also a nice, large "gourmet" store of the old style (good and bad). They are expanding significantly over the next few months.
