The recent Ames, Iowa post reminded me of the Northwestern Steak House (or somesuch) in Mason City (in the north central part of the state, up by the South Dakota border).
Staying in Mason City about 10-11 years ago, I had to spend quite a bit of time wheedling a recommendation for something other than the regular chain crap out of the motel clerk. He recommended this place to me, I went, and I had one of the great chowish meals ever!
Is it still around? Is it still good. Everything--steak, rice, whatever--was coated in a very tasty butter/oil sauce (read: grease), a lot like what we call "zip sauce" here in SE Michigan, but slightly less "piquant."
I keep meaning to get back there ... maybe I'll make a special trip.
